About Us
We are passionate about everything cheese and would love to share it with you.
Things We Care About
Happy Cheese Makers
It’s important to us that you have a great day out and enjoy a relaxing, fun time. Whether you intend to make cheese in the future or are just curious about the process, we promise a special day.
Supporting Local
We are passionate about the area we live in – North Canterbury, New Zealand. Being surrounded by amazing produce growers and farmers means our workshops are a chance to showcase our local region. We are very enthusiastic about promoting our region – we think it’s the best!
Self Reliance
Everyone can grow something, regardless of how little space you have. Everything you grow helps reduce the food bill, and improve healthy choices. It’s important education for our young families as well. As much of the food provided at our workshops as possible is grown by us and we work to encourage others to grow at least some of their food as well.
Anne – Cheesemaker & Teacher
Anne loves to cook and with a science background, loves to know why things happen.
Her cheese journey started in 2017 when she had 6 weeks off work due to some surgery. It seemed like the perfect time to have a go at something she’d been curious about for years. The class (and resulting 6 weeks of cheesemaking) sparked a real fascination for her and she hasn’t looked back!
With a Diploma in Adult Teaching and Learning and years of training people in her day job as a software consultant, teaching people how to make cheese combines passion with skill. There’s nothing better than watching people’s faces as they see milk turn to cheese for the very first time!
Steve – Host & Bottle Washer
Steve enjoys being the chief cheese tester, and is always designing and building things to help make the cheese production more efficient.
At Cheesemaking Workshops he is behind the scenes making sure everything runs smoothly, getting lunch and cheeseboards ready – and is always at the ready to race to the supermarket if Anne has forgotten something!
Occasionally he has to leave early to fulfil duties as the local karate instructor, but he’s always back in time to do the clean up!

Our Lifestyle
Anne and Steve live on a 850 sqm section in Urban Kaiapoi, North Canterbury. They have managed to fit 5 hens, a few thousand bees and 7 raised vegetable beds along with figs, pears, apples. peaches, plums, grapes, lemons, limes and cherries on to it! They rarely buy vegetables and one of their missions is to help others grow their own food too – no matter how small or even non-existent their garden is.
